The Focal Shape Twin is a 2.5-way active nearfield studio monitor, that is the flagship of the Focal Shape line. Shape Twin features astonishingly extended low end frequency response thanks in part to its dual 5" Flax cone woofers and dual passive radiator design. The 1" (25mm) 'M'-shaped Aluminum/Magnesium inverted dome tweeter gives Shape Twin incredible high frequency resolution, a wider sweet spot and reduced distortion.

Shape Twin is made in France, just like Shape 40, 50 and 65. These monitors combine an ingenuous design and numerous settings optimized for the acoustics of small listening rooms. Shape Twin stands out through its excellent rendering over the whole audio spectrum, its broad frequency response in the low end, and its high SPL considering its size. The compact design makes it easy to integrate even into the most cramped of rooms. Finally, its 2.5-way design gives it a real advantage when it comes to controlling the bass and lower mid-range registers which are the hardest to control in small rooms. Although it’s dedicated to near-field monitoring, this monitor enables extraordinary monitoring quality, in the lowest to the highest frequencies. Simply a must, this monitor will express its full potential from a listening distance of three feet away (1 meter).

Shape Twin’s innovations present a remarkable tonal balance, with very wide and precise stereo imaging. The low frequencies are well defined as well as controlled. The low-mid and mid ranges provide a true neutral sound.

'M'-shaped aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter

Aluminum has the advantage of having very high rigidity, whereas the combination of addition of magnesium increases the damping of the dome. At the same time, the 'M' shape of the inverted dome has two major advantages. Its directivity is even less that of the inverted dome tweeter, allowing for more flexibility in terms of listening position. Mechanically speaking, the 'M' shape gives the dome much more rigidity, while reducing distortion even more. The Poron® suspension provides a more linear frequency response curve below 6kHz, improving crossover with the woofer. The magnetic component has also been optimized thanks to a voice coil with a Kapton® frame which significantly reduces the Foucault current, and consequently, distortion. Finally, the horn housing the tweeter has been designed to provide equal horizontal and vertical directivity.

5" Flax sandwich cone

Developing speaker driver cone technologies is part of Focal’s core expertise. The Flax sandwich cones used for the woofers on Shape loudspeakers are composed of two materials: glass fibres and flax fibres. A layer of flax fibres is sandwiched between two layers of glass fibres. Glass fibre cones were also used on the 'W' composite sandwich cone of the SM6 and SM9 series, and are revered for their high rigidity considering their light weight.

Dual Passive Radiator

The dual passive radiator on Shape studio monitors solves a common issue encountered with nearfield monitors: to combine a compact design with extended low end frequency response.

Traditionally with dual passive radiators, rocking modes can occur depending on the frequency and the volume. In order to compensate for this phenomenon, two U-shaped surrounds positioned opposite each other join the passive disk to the basket, ensuring perfect symmetry during excursion and incursion. Finally, the very low tuning frequency allows the monitors to be placed very close to a wall.
