Inside The Box — Chandler Limited Little Devil EQ

The Little Devil’s treble and bass controls are representative of the British circuits used in many popular recordings and equipment. The Little Devil EQ’s high- and low-shelving circuits, as developed by JP Baxandall (the real father of British EQ), are the same as those used in classic Neve 1073 and 1081 modules. Like the 1073, Chandler set the Little Devil EQ’s high frequency to 12kHz and low frequency to a selectable 60/110Hz. These are capacitor-based circuits with a distinctly different sound than modern gyrator parametric circuits. The Little Devil EQ’s treble is smooth and open sounding, while the bass is warm and round. The selectable 60Hz bass is tuned for a deep, low bass suited for drums and bass guitar. The 110Hz selection has a wide, sweeping curve that accents midrange frequencies as well as bass—excellent for filling out guitars, bass and pretty much anything else.

The midrange frequencies are also based on the highly regarded British consoles, which were used in the 1073, 1081, and 33115. The mids are inductor based, like the renowned Pultec EQs. Each mid band also has a Q switch, which sharpens or smoothens the mid band for a more mellow or pointed boost and cut. As well as changing the center point of the EQ curve, Q also changes the amount of overall boost and cut for a more musical and controlled response.

The Little Devil EQ has a low-frequency filter with three selectable frequencies; 47Hz, 82Hz, and 150Hz, which have a wide, extended frequency response. The Little Devil EQ is sharply cut at 20Hz to keep the low end from becoming muddy. The Little Devil EQ also has a hardwire bypass with no components in the signal path to color sound in any way, enabling you to make accurate comparisons between treated and untreated sounds.
