Focal Sub6 Studio Subwoofer Speaker (Single)

Extremely versatile 350W subwoofer allows 2.1, 2.2, and multi-channel use

Though an integral member of Focal’s SM6 series dedicated to bass chores, the 350W Focal Sub6 was designed for optimum acoustic coupling with all professional monitors. To achieve full integration into any system, Focal gave the Sub6 all the usual suspects, including a stereo high-pass filter (75Hz or 100Hz) for left and right satellites, adjustable low-pass filter with mono summing, phase inverter, phase fine tuning, mute switch, and 2.1 bypass jack for remote control via footswitch (not included). For even greater versatility, the rear panel of the Focal Sub6 plays host to enough balanced XLR I/O to allow integration into 2.1, 2.2, and 5.1 systems. Did we mention that the Focal Sub6 sounds incredible? No? The Focal Sub6 sounds incredible.

What makes the Focal Sub6 sound so good?

The Sub6 is a large volume cabinet design, equipped with an 11" woofer featuring Focal’s “W” composite glass cone technology (see below) and a rear laminar port. The laminar port eliminates port noise by virtue of a larger outer port opening and a smaller inner throat, which eliminates air turbulence, providing a smooth flow of air through the port as energy is transferred from speaker to port. This configuration guarantees bass linearity regardless of SPL.

The Sub6’ rear-panel controls are extremely versatile, as is its connectivity, which allows 2.1, 2.2, and multi-channel use via its L/R I/O and LFE input. The Sub6’s flexible rear-panel controls, such as the high-pass crossover dedicated to monitors, and adjustable phase and level controls provide optimum coupling with Focal’s Solo6 Be and the Twin6 Be monitors. Another feature worthy of note is the Sub6’ rear-panel, 1/4" bypass input, which enables you to connect a footswitch (not included) to deactivate the subwoofer and high-pass crossovers on the outputs that feed the monitors. This simplifies and greatly improves control during the various stages of monitoring.

The “W” composite sandwich cone

Focal has been developing composite sandwich Cone technology for over 15 years. The "W" process (Glass/Foam/Glass), used on the Focal SM9 and SM6 series, provides a true optimization of frequency response by fine tuning mass, rigidity, and damping characteristics. The balance between these three fundamental, yet often opposing parameters forms the foundation for the outstanding sonic neutrality of Focal speakers.

The 11" Focal-designed woofer is equipped with a high-excursion system that enables accurate and extended reproduction in the bass/infra bass register. Its 3" voice coil ensures perfect mechanical coupling and total control of the driver, even at high SPL. The magnet, made of double ferrite, produces a highly symmetric magnetic field that maintains the integrity of dynamics, even at very low frequencies.

Custom-designed amplification stage

Designing an amplifier to be integrated inside a speaker cabinet requires a very different set of rules than those for a traditional amp. Unfortunately, speaker-size and cooling issues are, more often than not, at odds with the quality and power requirements for a sonically transparent speaker. For a best-of-both-worlds solution, Focal engineers used BASH® (Bridged Amplifier Switching Hybrid) amplification technology to develop the bass/mid-range amplification circuit for all SM6-series professional monitors. The resulting amplifier combines the best of class AB style circuits (for exceptional quality) with a high-power class D-type yield, which is crucial when housing a 350W RMS circuit in such a small space. BASH offers extreme amounts of power without the wasted heat and energy of traditional amplifier designs.
