The Rupert Neve Designs OptoFET is a highly versatile analog compressor and wave shaper that combines an all-new FET compression circuit with an optimized Optical circuit in a single rack space. Designed for tracking, mixing, and mastering, it offers immense creative control—ranging from transparent vocal smoothing to extreme envelope shaping with massive harmonic texture.

Dual Stage and Dual Band Modes

The OptoFET features two primary operating modes that redefine how you approach dynamic control:

• Dual Stage Mode: In this serial configuration, the FET and OPTO compressors run in series. This allows you to catch fast peaks with the FET and smooth out the remaining signal with the OPTO (or vice versa). A dedicated FLIP button allows you to instantly swap the order of the two compressors.
• Dual Band Mode: By engaging the X-OVER button, the unit becomes a powerful dual-band processor. A variable crossover control (50 Hz to 500 Hz) splits the signal, assigning each compressor to either the low or high frequency band for independent tonal and dynamic shaping.

The FET and OPTO Compression Engines

Each compressor circuit is purpose-built to offer a distinct sonic character and features its own comprehensive set of 31-detent controls:

• All-New FET Design: Engineered for ultra-fast response, the FET section features attack times as fast as 100 microseconds. It includes variable Release, Threshold, +20 dB of Make-up Gain, and a parallel Blend control. Ratios can be toggled between 4:1 and 8:1, with a 125 Hz side-chain high-pass filter.
• GRIT Mode (FET): This unique harmonic mode transforms the FET compressor into a wave shaper, introducing musical harmonic distortion focused in the upper frequency range to help sources "pop" or transform completely.
• Optimized OPTO Design: Designed as the perfect complement to the FET, the OPTO circuit generates low-order harmonics with a smoother, more musical response. It features attack times starting at 5 milliseconds, variable Release, Threshold, +20 dB of Make-up Gain, and a parallel Blend control. Ratios are set to 2:1 or 5:1.
• BLOOM Mode (OPTO): Engaging BLOOM increases low-order harmonics significantly, making sources feel warmer, rounder, and more pronounced in the low end without the need for traditional EQ.

Precision Gain Staging and Hardware

• Total Gain Control: Includes +/- 12 dB Input and Output trim controls to perfectly manage gain staging. These can be used to drive the compressors harder for harmonic saturation or kept conservative for transparent leveling.
• 31-Detent Potentiometers: All variable controls utilize high-quality, 31-position detented pots. This ensures high-precision settings and makes recalling parameters or matching a pair for stereo operation effortless.
• Custom Transformers: Features custom transformer-balanced inputs and outputs for the classic Neve "weight" and sonic authority.
